Hopkinson Waste At The Chesterfield Business Expo

The Chesterfield Business Expo is a new annual event that serves as a vibrant platform for businesses in Chesterfield, and the surrounding regions. It’s a newly developed Expo, and the first ever event was held on the 25th October 2023.

Attending the Chesterfield Business Expo proved to be a valuable experience for Hopkinson Waste, for several reasons. Firstly, it provided us with a unique opportunity to showcase our products/services to a diverse and broad audience, that we otherwise would probably not reach.

The networking aspect of the expo allowed us to connect with other local businesses, paving the way for collaboration and strategic partnerships including:

Additionally, the expo offered a platform to stay on top of of industry trends and innovations through engaging with other exhibitors and attending informative sessions.

We also had a table of merchandise at our stand- (Limited edition purple beanies for winter, baseball caps, pens and kids’ t-shirts) and by the end of the event, our table was empty! Potential clients got free purpleness, and we increased our brand visibility, so everyone was happy!

Why did we do it, and how is it making waste management more exciting and fun?

Hopkinson Waste’s signature colours are purple and green, which represent our commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness. 

So, we decided to wrap some of our new trucks in the bold and eye-catching signature purple of Hopkinson Waste. This choice connects our trucks with our brand, and makes them recognisable. 

They’re also amazing to drive- purple being such a happy colour. Our team loves the fresh look of the purple trucks. It creates a sense of pride in what we do.

With the purple, they stand out on the road: you won’t miss them easily. 

Hence, this high visibility purple also ensures that our vehicles are safer and more efficient.

Hopkinson Waste has been providing a skip hire service across Chesterfield, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire for over 30 years’. In this time we encountered pretty  much everything there is that can be put into a skip. Below is a quick guide as to what you can and cannot put in one of our skips.

When hiring a skip from Hopkinson Waste to dispose of waste, there are certain items you can put into the skip, these items include:

 Common household waste such as furniture, paper, cardboard, plastic, and non-electrical household items.

 Small electrical items like toasters, kettles and lamps.

 Scrap metal items like old appliances, metal furniture, and other metal debris.

 Materials from DIY projects and renovations, and small construction works like wood, bricks, tiles and concrete, etc.

 Branches, leaves, grass clippings, and other biodegradable garden materials. (Excluding invasive plant species, such as Japanese Knotweed.)

 Asbestos, paints, solvents, batteries, chemicals, oil, and other hazardous materials, are not allowed in regular skips. Special arrangements are needed for their safe disposal.

 Needles, syringes, any medical/biological waste, needs to be handled through specialist medical waste disposal services.

 Gas cylinders, fireworks, petrol, or any other flammable or explosive substances are strictly prohibited and must be disposed of by a specialist elsewhere,

 Gas appliances or gas canisters should not be put in skips.

 Batteries, including car batteries, are dangerous for us to take, and should be taken to designated recycling centres.

 Liquids of any kind, including wet paint, oil or chemicals, should not be placed in the skip.

 Asbestos is hazardous and requires specialised handling and disposal.

 Large electrical appliances, (like refrigerators, freezers, televisions and computers) need separated disposal due to their environmental impact.

What can I and can’t I put in my skip?

If you don't have a drive or private property but require a skip hire service, many people will wonder:

There are several alternative options to consider for skip hire in Chesterfield, all of which involve a skip hire permit. 

A permit for a skip refers to the permission granted by the local council to place your skip on public property. These places include public highways, a car park, or pavement.

We will apply for a skip permit if one is needed. We simply require a few days' notice to apply for the skip license. 

Whether you require a builders skip for commercial use or a domestic skip for residential, there are a number of options available should you not have access to private land.

With the public having access to the location and it being potentially hazardous, a permit is needed. When placing a skip on a road, certain safety measures may be required to prevent accidents and ensure visibility for those using the road.

: If there is enough space on the footpath besides your property and depending on your skip size. You may be able to place the skip there with a permit. Again, with it potentially obstructing walkways, certain safety precautions may need to be followed.

: If you have access to a nearby car park, you might be able to get a permit in the parking space.

This can be quite common in urban or commercial areas.

: If there are vacant spaces or lots in your area, you might be allowed to place a skip there.

On private land, such as your land, construction sites, or business premises, you may place the skip if it doesn't violate any property regulations.

We were asked to help out Blue Bell Wood Children’s Hospice with their Christmas 2022 Tree Recycling Project, it was a really easy decision - YES!

Helping to support a fantastic, local cause

Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice are a local charity who help families in the area wanting an alternative to hospital care. They do a fantastic job supporting families from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire.

We dropped off a large RoRo skip (Roll on Roll Off) in the early days of January 2023. People could then book their Christmas tree to be dropped off for recycling and make a donation to Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, helping them to continue the fantastic work they do locally.

With our contribution and the support of other local businesses, the hospice was able to collect a record number of trees for recycling and raise a staggering £33,319 to help support local families across the region.
